Just under a week ago, we debuted our ongoing social commentary on the growing obsession with getting more “Likes” on Facebook taking the form of 11 digital shorts in a series called “Fan Page Fail” (www.fanpagefail.com).
Featuring the socially reckless character Jonny Like (played by actor/comedian Elisha Yaffe), the intention is to provide a wake-up call for brands, organizations, and public figures on how NOT to inspire a following in social media (and of course offer up a solution).
While the series shows that blind promotional gimmicks don’t translate into increased fan growth, each short symbolizes a Facebook marketing mistake that many have witnessed (or, hopefully less likely, have enacted themselves).
Fan Page Fail #1: Street Preachin’ – Besides our Director Matt Luem insisting on putting a big ass thumb on top his gear van, this first video short really was inspired by all of those inefficient brands that consistently shout, “me me me” in trying to attracting new fans. The lesson: aggressive one-way voices like Jonny’s will likely fall upon deaf ears.
Fan Page Fail #2: Beach Baller – One of the keys to attracting Facebook fans is to engage them in the right place, at the right time, with the right message. In this short we wanted to highlight this lesson in an over-the-top manner. As you can see, Jonny’s poor choice in timing and manners (and body art), causes a potential female fan to flee. Special thanks to Jennifer Akerman for playing along with our ridiculousness.
Fan Page Fail #3: Dirty Urinal – Our team wanted to emphasize the importance of spending time and effort targeting the right type of fan. A very special thanks to actor Jacob Witkin for bringing the creepy and making our time spent in a disgusting 100 square foot bathroom fly by. “I liiiiive on Facebook”. Amazing.
